Animated Gif Files Stopped Working

Animated .Gifs are a cute, requiring low bandwidth, way of decorating our blogs. Some contain records of memorable events. Using one below I decorated my Musings blog, in commemoration of the death of a very bad guy.

Recently, many such images stopped working, in multiple blogs all across the Blogosphere.

This is the only .Gif that I have, that currently works as published natively through Blogger (using Picasa).

(Compare with the version below, which will animate.)
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_pzC_7PLtN-0/
RmH1vJ_2KfI/AAAAAAAAAag/sR1MkaWHoPs/s1600-h/Mona+Lisa.gif"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_pzC_7PLtN-0/RmH1vJ_2KfI/
AAAAAAAAAag/sR1MkaWHoPs/s320/Mona+Lisa.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071604845882255858" /></a>

I know that this was a Photoshop product, but I still had to include this one. As originally uploaded in January of this year, it worked then. Later, it stopped working.

It's possible that we can use Google Documents as a host for animated photos.
  1. Upload an animated .gif file to Google Documents.
  2. Publish the uploaded photo, selecting "Post To blog".
  3. Make the blog site settings, as desired, when posting.
  4. Find the URL of the newly uploaded file.
  5. Add the URL, as the "img src=" tag, in your blog post.
  6. Publish your new blog post.

I don't know if I am going to tell you anything you don't already know.

So, the animation breakage is related to Blogger's handling of the image in storage. I think your gifs will never get better and start animating again. When I downloaded and looked at saddam's cat, there was no animation information, it's just a nice picture.

I downloaded Saddam's cat from somewhere else and it animates in a post if it is on my web site. If I upload it to Blogger, it stops working. I did an example at Animated GIF test.

The problem that most Bloggers are seeing is uploaded pictures. Animated .gifs upload as .pngs.

Saddams Cat, in its original location, was working fine when uploaded 1/22. It stopped working later, and I did nothing to make it stop working. It's a .gif.

My animated GIFs also just stopped working (8-2-07), despite being fine for 6 months. The same image opened in a blank browser animates just fine. I tried uploading the pictures again with a slightly different name, but the animations still doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas here?

Michael,

As I wrote, Blogger is aware of the problem. Until it's fixed, we'll have to host animated .gifs from either Google Documents, or Picasa.

What's The URL Of My Blog?

We see the plea for help, periodically I need the URL of my blog, so I can give it to my friends. Help! Who's buried in Grant's Tomb, after all? No Chuck, be polite. OK, OK. The title of this blog is "The Real Blogger Status", and the title of this post is "What's The URL Of My Blog?".

Add A Custom Redirect, If You Change A Post URL

When you rename a blog, the most that you can do, to keep the old URL useful, is to setup a stub post , with a clickable link to the new URL. Yo! The blog is now at xxxxxxx.blogspot.com!! Blogger forbids gateway blogs, and similar blog to blog redirections . When you rename a post, you can setup a custom redirect - and automatically redirect your readers to the post, under its new URL. You should take advantage of this option, if you change a post URL.

Adding A Link To Your Blog Post

Occasionally, you see a very odd, cryptic complaint I just added a link in my blog, but the link vanished! No, it wasn't your imagination.
