The Real Blogger Status

Some blog owners would like their readers to view the entire blog in one page. A small blog, with very limited size, can theoretically fit on one page. If you intend to publish a blog with any future, and page rank , you will have to publish content periodically - and the size of the blog will increase, steadily. And eventually, thanks in part to main page limitation by auto pagination , older posts in your blog will be forced into archive pages.

We see an occasional suggestion, in Blogger Help Forum: Learn More About Blogger , about archive convenience. Some blog owners, presumably ones who do not publish so often, would like to archive posts on a yearly basis. It would be great, if you would add the option of "Yearly" under the Archive gadget "Archive Frequency". This blog owner may not know why posts are archived on a weekly or monthly schedule.

One of the most useful accessories for listing posts, in a blog, is the Archives retrieval gadget. Titled "Blog Archive" in " Add a Gadget ", the archive gadget provides an automatically updated index of all blog posts, sequenced by date. It is an enhanced version of the first accessory for Blogger blogs, provided when the blog home page was previously no more than the most recent post.

A few blog owners become concerned about how their blogs are indexed - and why the search hit lists, that point to their posts, point to archive or main pages - instead of the individual post pages. "www.mydomain.com/2015_01_01_archive.html" , "www.mydomain.com/2014_12_01_archive.html", and similar URLs are part of the same URL structure as "www.mydomain.com" - and as "www.mydomain.com/2015/02/whatever.html". They aren't harmful to the blog search engine reputation. They are annoying, though. When I setup this blog, long ago - and would find my posts listed in index pages, they used to annoy me, too.

When Auto Pagination was introduced , many blog owners, who preferred to display their blog as one long main page, were insulted. If I design my blog to display all of my articles on the front page, my readers should see my blog on the front page! They were unable to see the need to segment the main page display . If your blog uses one of the new dynamic templates, you may have noticed that there is no Archives link (nor an Archives gadget). With a Dynamic Template, there is no Archives link, because there are no archived posts, period.

Among the many odd circumstances connected with the controversial Auto Pagination feature that was introduced a month ago , we see reports by a few bloggers of broken inlinks, caused by segmentation of archive and main pages. Most reports specifically mention broken SERP entries, which link to content that's now found in an archive or main page segment that's reached by one or more clicks of "Older Posts". The new and currently un indexed segments have URLs which differ from the SERP entries. This effect is similar to a problem which I wrote about some time ago, which affect SERPs linking to main page content . Both the archive pages and the main page in a blog are more likely to be indexed by the search engines, because there is more content on these pages, and some content has already been indexed. Some posts, lacking inlinks completely, and depending upon the publishing frequency, may never be indexed except as archive or main page content.

A blog, by tradition, is an online journal. We write the posts, and when we enable post titles, we choose the post titles. When we enable post pages and post titles, the URLs of the posts are a function of the dates, and the titles, of the posts. We can choose the titles of the posts, but the Blogger post editor chooses the URLs. This is a key component in the Blogger Infrastructure . The static page editor ("Edit Pages") uses the same engine as the Post Editor, and Static Pages (aka "Pages") use a similar basic URL structure.

Setting up a web site is a lot of work. Once you get past the process of actually setting up a web site , you have to write something. If you want very many readers, you have to write a lot, frequently, and regularly. If you want your readers to return, they have to be able to find what you write. And need I say this - if you want readers to return over and over, what you publish has to be attractive and organised.

This blog has a lot of posts for me to keep up with, and they have been developed over a couple years. To find relevant posts, I frequently look in the date sequenced catalogue, aka "Archives". One would expect to find a catalogue of posts for each month, since the blog was started. One would expect . Before checking your blog, be sure to reload the view, if it's been sitting for a few hours. This seems to have happened maybe sometime after 18:00 PST today, give or take 2 or 3 hours. I didn't see consistency in all of my browsers, until I refreshed the view of the blog. This is normal. This, too, is normal. This is not normal. The numbers in parentheses indicates that I have posts for those months. But when "opened" (note the arrows for August, July, and June pointed down), nothing shows in the posts lists, as it does for December and November. Last week, I reported of my personal experience with the Blogger Tower Of Babel aka Archives language problem. That was a one day experience. Today, we see numerous folks reporting that their Archives are now showing in Albanian . Interestingly, some state that changing the Language setting under Publishing corrects the immediate symptom. So now we have to ask why language settings are changing? In the process of setting up a new post in The Real Blogger Status, I encountered the archives language problem yet again. And I watched it come and go. Maybe you can too, though you will have to click on the pictures below, unless you have very good eyesight. I renamed My Archives to "Contents". I've never liked the term "Archive", as I have always thought of "archives" as "stuff that you stashed away somewhere because it's probably useless", an intermediate trash can. The stuff in my blog isn't that. At least, I don't think so. So where is all of the stuff that I posted last month? One example. So where are all of my posts? OK, there's this months. And there's last months. A second example. The archive list, opened to June 2007. Click on the black arrow, left of "2015". See the black arrow, pointing to the right, located left of "2015"? Click on that arrow - and watch. The archive list, opened to 2015. Click on the black arrow, left of "December". The archive list, opened to December 2015. Just click on the little black arrows, and all can be seen.

When I write a post in my blogs, whether PChuck's Network , or The Real Blogger Status , or whatever, it's a challenge to get the post into a finished state. The most obvious challenge there is writing the content, but linking the content to other content is a struggle too. With a pure blog, you write a bunch of posts, related or not, and have an index to the posts in the sidebar. The reader reads the index, and select a post to read. The posts are linked through the sidebar. My blogs aren't pure blogs - they are hypertext documents, using a blog structure. Using the Blogger One Button Publishing structure allows me to concentrate on writing content, and dealing with formatting, structure, and style later, or as time permits. Some of my blog posts are linked to other blog posts, through links in the text , but with others you'll still need links in the sidebar.
