The New Blogger Browser Support Policy, And Ongoing Problems With Blogger

This month, the new Blogger browser support policy goes into effect.
Starting next month Blogger.com will only support modern browsers.
This week, we're seeing new reports of problems with posting comments. It's possible that these newly reported problems, as well as other problems reported with Following, and with Stats, are partially caused by lack of support for older browsers.

Blogger blogging is based upon our use of web pages (HTML) - but Blogger use of web pages goes way beyond simple HTML. Each different and shiny Blogger accessory and procedure uses code (aka "scripts") and variables (aka "cookies"), to use features involving sequences of web pages. Various Blogger features involve multiple web pages - and thus use cookies and scripts, heavily.
  • Authentication / Login.
  • Commenting.
  • Following.
  • Stats.
These Blogger features are vulnerable to overly optimistic filtering of cookies and scripts. Besides filtering, both cookies and scripts are vulnerable to various peccadilloes exhibited by different version of the various browsers, that we all use.

As Blogger stops supporting older browsers - and as they deprecate sections of code to make their features more reliable, for the folks using the more modern browsers - people using older browsers will see more and more odd problems.

When you report a problem with Blogger, the first question asked of you will be
Please, state your browser name and version.
And you absolutely must know how to determine both, accurately. For a canonical list of browser versions supported by Blogger, click here.

What's The URL Of My Blog?

We see the plea for help, periodically I need the URL of my blog, so I can give it to my friends. Help! Who's buried in Grant's Tomb, after all? No Chuck, be polite. OK, OK. The title of this blog is "The Real Blogger Status", and the title of this post is "What's The URL Of My Blog?".

Add A Custom Redirect, If You Change A Post URL

When you rename a blog, the most that you can do, to keep the old URL useful, is to setup a stub post , with a clickable link to the new URL. Yo! The blog is now at xxxxxxx.blogspot.com!! Blogger forbids gateway blogs, and similar blog to blog redirections . When you rename a post, you can setup a custom redirect - and automatically redirect your readers to the post, under its new URL. You should take advantage of this option, if you change a post URL.

Adding A Link To Your Blog Post

Occasionally, you see a very odd, cryptic complaint I just added a link in my blog, but the link vanished! No, it wasn't your imagination.
