OK, It's Back

After several long days, it looks like Blogger has indeed restored their service.
We’re nearly back to normal — you can publish again, and in the coming hours posts and comments that were temporarily removed should be restored.
As indicated, some comments and posts are still being restored.

Just for completeness, I'll point out that I manually rewrote my immediately previous post When You Setup Commenting On Your Blog, Enter Email Addresses Properly, in Notepad, while Blogger was in read only mode - and re published it, immediately, after I noted the ability to do that. We will see what happens, when Blogger tries to restore that post, during the next few hours.
  • Comments and posts are still being restored. How blogs, newly created preceding the outage, are to be handled, is apparently being decided. Recovery of Layout / Template tweaks have been requested, but not promised.
  • All missing comments and posts will be restored, eventually (see below).
  • The restore process will take into account comments and posts that have been republished by the authors (as I did).
  • The restore process will include proper date / time stamps so we can check for duplicates.
  • If we are patient enough, all will be recovered.

Please, be patient (and politely persistent). If you personally continue to see a bX code when trying to login or to access your dashboard, may I suggest the time honoured remedy of clearing cache, cookies, and sessions, and restarting the browser. Then, report the code, and details, in Blogger Help Forum: Something Is Broken.

And as always, consider that your observed problem may be only coincidentally related to the problems of May 11, 2011. Diagnose your problems, when possible, before complaining.

(Update 2011/05/15 23:00 PDT): Blogger has provided a way to report problems relating to this episode.
If you still have other issues, please contact us via the temporary form we’ve set up for this particular issue.

what exactly was the problem that it took so long?

NYC,

I'd say that the Buzz post contains a good summary of the problem, and its resolution.

"Here’s what happened: during scheduled maintenance work Wednesday night, we experienced some data corruption that impacted Blogger’s behavior. Since then, bloggers and readers may have experienced a variety of anomalies including intermittent outages, disappearing posts, and arriving at unintended blogs or error pages."

I made a new blog. Now it is missing. Do you think it will be restored also?

Semper,

How newly created blogs, lost during the recovery, are to be processed is possibly yet to be decided.

Here, you may have to be patient. I noted some confusion discussed during the read only period, where duplication of content on some blog URLs was noted.

I changed my template slightly the following day, before blogger took a nose dive. But today those changes have been 'rolled-back'. Will this be rectified as well? Also, what about the stats on yesterdays posts? Will this be rectified too?

Sorry for asking you all this, as you seem like the only one who seems to know what is going on.

Blogger is still down for me. If I try to go to the dashboard it gives an, "We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request... error code bX-ixy9ss" error.

Felix,

If you continue to see a bX code when trying to login or access the dashboard or another Blogger utility, may I suggest that you first clear cache, cookies, and sessions - then restart the browser.

Carly,

Since comments are being restored, you may have to be patient. This outage was inconvenient for most of us. 8-(

Reviewer,

Stats and Template Tweaks are details that I won't guess on. But I will note them as questions, and watch for reports in the forum.

Great to be back...had to go 'Outside' today....so strange...

Paul,

You mean that odd neighbourhood between the front door and your car? How quaint.

Do you know how Blogger will be handling changes that aren't directly content-related? I've seen a number of questions on the "Something's Broken" forum re: template changes, new gadgets, new URLs, etc. Thanks for your help.

Will blogs that were posted during the period of difficulty but up and visible for most of yesterday be restored too during the restore operation now underway??

Or is it confined to comments??

Pana / Publius,

So far, we've only seen a commitment to restoring comments and posts. New blogs, gadgets, template tweaks, and such we are still waiting for details.
Wow, what timing for me! I had a hard drive failure two weeks ago and only got my computer back from the tech guys a couple of days ago - didn't hook back up until last evening so I guess I missed all the fun! Couldn't blog last night but was able to today and everything that is supposed to be there seems to be there!

Still in the restoring process? Just asking to check whether the loss of my recent posts will remain permanent... Sorry to bother you with repetetive questions, and thank you!

My whole blog is missing.. template changes, sidebar, gadgets and all my posts, etc. It's a new blog made just before the outage.. Will all be restored to how it was before I got the Bx error?

is STILL not back up as of 4:07PM, 5/13/11. I worked might hard on this. Is it gone forever?

Cheers!

Should bloggers who discover previously published posts now appearing in their drafts republish them, or wait for Blogger to restore them?

And what about comments - some bloggers are asking commenters to repost. Should they wait for them to be restored instead?
My Wednesday/Thursday work is missing.

This post is gone! When I click on it I get an error. Do you think it will come back?

Great. :) My posts are back. What about template changes and gadgets, etc.. will these be restored?

A couple days without blogging. We all survived it and the world will continue to spin.
You can bet Blogger is working like crazy to get everything restored and if you consider how many blogs are out there this is no small task. Hundreds of millions easily.

Chuck, I saw at least one new blog that appeared to have created during the mellee that was back up and running.

So when exactly were you aware of the outages?

Comments from my new post are still missing. Hoping they come back :(
Heh, I knew it would pay off some day to make a copy of the template code every time I tweak it. When it was back to an older version, I simply overwrote it with the copy of the new one. :)

Edits in older posts were also lost (no biggie; I had only corrected a few typos which returned like persistant little gnomes).

Gabriele,

You get the Comment Of The Month award. And I'll award myself the Hindsight Observation Of The Month award, too.

Thanks for the reminder to clear cache, etc., and try a new browser. I was finally able to publish today in a different browser.

I still can't edit posts! And my last post posted twice!

Since blogger returned to service my meta tags are not confirming, my hits are not counting and I am showing zero backlinks. Internally I have odd looking labels that i cannot get rid of and blogger keeps trying to force me into that new pile of poo called an interface.

Funny part is that if i search yahoo site explorer for parts of my urls they show up.

I've cleaned my cache! Ive used another browser! Ive tried another computer! STILL NOTHING!! I cant edit posts!!

What's The URL Of My Blog?

We see the plea for help, periodically I need the URL of my blog, so I can give it to my friends. Help! Who's buried in Grant's Tomb, after all? No Chuck, be polite. OK, OK. The title of this blog is "The Real Blogger Status", and the title of this post is "What's The URL Of My Blog?".

Adding A Link To Your Blog Post

Occasionally, you see a very odd, cryptic complaint I just added a link in my blog, but the link vanished! No, it wasn't your imagination.

Add A Custom Redirect, If You Change A Post URL

When you rename a blog, the most that you can do, to keep the old URL useful, is to setup a stub post , with a clickable link to the new URL. Yo! The blog is now at xxxxxxx.blogspot.com!! Blogger forbids gateway blogs, and similar blog to blog redirections . When you rename a post, you can setup a custom redirect - and automatically redirect your readers to the post, under its new URL. You should take advantage of this option, if you change a post URL.
