Identify The Template In Your Blog

My preferred policy in Information Technology starts with
Everything has a name.
Having worked with Blogger for several years, I have compromised that, and now say
Everything should have a name.
Unfortunately, there will always be things that have no names, they are just there.

When you work on the template in your blog, and especially when you ask for help with the template, the first thing that you must provide is the URL of the blog.

The first thing that I do, when providing template help, is look at the blog, and determine.

  • Is the template classic, or layouts?
  • What is the make and model?
    • Is it a Blogger standard template, or third party?
    • If Blogger, what "model" is it?

While you're reading this article, do "View page source" or "Ctrl+U" (for Chrome), "View", then "Page Source" (for Firefox), or "View", then "Source" (for Internet Explorer). Alternately, use an HTTP text proxy. That will give you a display of the code behind the page. You'll find a couple relevant and useful clues, in the display.

At the top, and since this blog uses a Blogger standard template, you will find the template "model" information. Third party templates may, or may not, have this. Likewise, highly customised templates may, or may not, have this.

/*

Blogger Template Style
Name: Simple
Designer: Josh Peterson
URL: www.noaesthetic.com
----------------------------------------------- */

That tells me that I am looking at a blog that uses the Blogger standard "Simple" template. It's "Simple" - but somewhat customised.

Mine's a third party that started out as a Wordpress template (I think...) that I have modified to the point of non-recognition as far as the source code goes. It looks pretty much the same, but I've totally redone it using PHP, includeing the use of includes so that a change of the sidebar now nolonger requires that I republish the entire blog for a cosmetic change.
I always wonder how I could do that easily.
Thanks for the info and your sites are great. Happy Holidays

What's The URL Of My Blog?

We see the plea for help, periodically I need the URL of my blog, so I can give it to my friends. Help! Who's buried in Grant's Tomb, after all? No Chuck, be polite. OK, OK. The title of this blog is "The Real Blogger Status", and the title of this post is "What's The URL Of My Blog?".

Add A Custom Redirect, If You Change A Post URL

When you rename a blog, the most that you can do, to keep the old URL useful, is to setup a stub post , with a clickable link to the new URL. Yo! The blog is now at xxxxxxx.blogspot.com!! Blogger forbids gateway blogs, and similar blog to blog redirections . When you rename a post, you can setup a custom redirect - and automatically redirect your readers to the post, under its new URL. You should take advantage of this option, if you change a post URL.

Adding A Link To Your Blog Post

Occasionally, you see a very odd, cryptic complaint I just added a link in my blog, but the link vanished! No, it wasn't your imagination.
