Extracting The URL Behind A Link

Many times when diagnosing a problem, we may need to examine the URL that is attached to a link.

Every link has a caption (that we see) - and a URL (that we can't see). The URL is the important part of a link - and knowing how to extract the URL can be a crucial part of diagnosing a problem.

This post has a title "Extracting The URL Behind A Link", and the title (as with every post in this blog) is the caption to a link. The URL that is attached to the link, in the title here, is http://blogging.nitecruzr.net/2010/09/extracting-url-behind-link.html.

Sometimes, we may need to know the URL that is attached to a link that only you (the blog owner) can see.

  • Maybe, we need the URL that is attached to the "View Blog" link on the Blogger dashboard.
  • The URL that is attached to the "Edit" link in the "Edit Posts" menu may be useful.
  • Sometimes, the URL that is attached to the "Edit" link for a given gadget in "Page Elements" is needed.

Let's use the URL that is attached to this post title (above), as an example.

  • Hover the mouse cursor over the title "Extracting The URL Behind A Link".
  • Right click on the mouse, and select "Copy Link", "Copy link address", "Copy Link Location", or "Copy Link URL" (depending upon which browser you are using).
  • Paste into a forum discussion, a post, or the text editor of your choice.

Good. Now, do similarly with the link that only you can see, from the dashboard, from "Layout", or from "Posts". Or even, a label search URL, that you need to extract, to add a dynamic page.

Some blog owners are unsure what a Jump Break looks like, when applied to their blogs. Occasionally, in Blogger Help Forum: Get Help with an Issue , we see the confusion. Where's the Jump Break? or I added a Jump Break to several posts, but it never shows up! When asked for a screen print of what they're seeing, they may provide a image of the post, in the Post Editor Preview window - or possibly, the published post, but in post page view.
