Paying For A Custom Domain

Almost all features of Blogger One Button Publishing are free - though not entirely from an altruistic decision by Google.

One of the few Blogger features that is not free is the ability to publish a blog to a non BlogSpot URL, also known as "custom domain" publishing.

Even though custom domain publishing is not free, it's not a feature from which Blogger / Google directly receives income. The cost for a custom domain registration goes directly to the registrar - and for very real services. The need for payment creates the need for some decision by the blog owner, when purchasing the domain.

Whether purchasing a custom domain from a Blogger "partner", using the "Buy a domain" wizard, or directly from a registrar, you're going to have to provide payment in a medium that's accepted by the registrar.

If you use "Buy a domain", you're limited in choice of payment media. The "Buy a domain" wizard accepts only specific major credit cards, it does not accept
  • Debit cards.
  • Internet bank services, such as PayPal.
  • All bank issued credit cards.
And, before starting the purchase, make sure that your credit card is in good standing.

If you cannot provide an accepted form of payment to "Buy a domain", you're going to have to purchase your domain directly from a registrar. If you purchase directly, the choice of registrar is crucial to the success of your domain. Try to choose a registrar which:
  • Accepts payment, in a currency that you can provide.
  • Provides "4 x A / CNAME" (asymmetrical) or "2 x CNAME" (symmetrical) host configuration.
  • Can provide you the support that you require.

Remember that, should you purchase directly from a registrar, you will be responsible for setting up the domain properly - either on your own, or with the assistance of the registrar. In this case, the latter registrar choice criterion becomes very relevant.

A friend of mine wanted a dot "ca", which I purchased through Namespro. They were really helpful giving a Newbie like me telephone support to redirect the site:
whitehousehotel.ca

I highly recommend them. (Like them so much, I applied for an affiliate link!)

Add A Custom Redirect, If You Change A Post URL

When you rename a blog, the most that you can do, to keep the old URL useful, is to setup a stub post , with a clickable link to the new URL. Yo! The blog is now at xxxxxxx.blogspot.com!! Blogger forbids gateway blogs, and similar blog to blog redirections . When you rename a post, you can setup a custom redirect - and automatically redirect your readers to the post, under its new URL. You should take advantage of this option, if you change a post URL.

Jump Break Is Visible Only In An Index Page

Some blog owners are unsure what a Jump Break looks like, when applied to their blogs. Occasionally, in Blogger Help Forum: Get Help with an Issue , we see the confusion. Where's the Jump Break? or I added a Jump Break to several posts, but it never shows up! When asked for a screen print of what they're seeing, they may provide a image of the post, in the Post Editor Preview window - or possibly, the published post, but in post page view.
