Page Elements: Add A Gadget

Recently, we see concerned bloggers asking about their inability to add page elements to their blog. Besides several key settings in the template, there's a naming problem, which surfaces occasionally.
When I go to layout, and then to Page Elements, I'm given the option to "add a gadget" but not to "add a page element." The Add a Page Element button has never been displayed since I started the blog, so it's not something I broke myself.

Oh no!! How do I add a page element!!??

What everybody may not realise is that what Blogger used to call "widgets" are now called "gadgets", and adding a "widget" (weird term) / "page element" (boring term) is now called adding a "gadget" (descriptive term).

What we call the "Page Elements" wizard may be found as the "Layout" link in the dashboard. If you publish the blog using a dynamic template, layout customisations aren't supported - and you may not have "Settings - Layout".

Of course, there could still be cases where the "Add a Gadget" link doesn't appear, doesn't appear where you need it, or doesn't work for you. You still need to be aware of template restrictions, whether intentional or non-intentional.

When you look at the selections in "Add a Gadget", note the author names, carefully. The gadgets that are not attributed as "By Blogger" are provided by third parties, and should be selected with care.

Thanks for such an useful info.
But then how can I copy html codes in order, for instance, to get a widged radio on my side bar?
If you can help, thanks in advance.

Manolo,

You'll probably take the HTML code for the radio, and copy it into an HTML / JavaScript gadget.

If that doesn't help, you need to post in GBH: How Do I?, for more conversation.

Nitecruzr,

I am not experiencing any problems with my page elements in so far as your article addresses, however for some reason my blog post 'edit' button is missing and my 'add a gadget' sidebar on my page elements layout is now shifted to the bottom left. None of that has effected the look of my blog, but at some point I may want to put some ads between my posts.

I have customized my template considerably so I would imagine I have some extra divs somewhere due to my widening the main and sidebar to fit my own header. Can you offer any suggestions?

Thanks for your time.

Jim,

You have a corrupt template. What you need to do is fall back to a working copy, then move forward more carefully, and test after each change.

Nitecruzr,

I usually do test after each change, however, as my site looked fine, I made the decision to stop backing it up. It wasn't until I decided to put Google banner ads between my post that I noticed my error.

Thanks for your response on this issue. It looks like I have my work cut out for me.

I appreciate that things are NAMED differently...but then I truly can't import lists of anything, either. I can't copy a list of links and just paste it in as an "element." I have to add each item to the sidebar, one at a time. The old template, in that sense, has this one beat in spades.

Janny,

You can import a list of links and paste them as an HTML element, just as easily as you could import a list of links and paste them into an HTML template. An HTML gadget is the same as an HTML template, when you need to paste HTML.

Thank you!

I thought I lost my Blog Archives forever. Once I knew that all I had to do was click on "add a gadget" look at the gadget list & select it, everything was fine again.

Excellent help! Excellent Post!

If add a gadget means I can add an element, then How do I add an image if there is not an option to do so?

Marcy,

Check the settings in the template code.
